When artificial intelligence meets surrealism: unique work of art up for sale to benefit the Institute

To celebrate the centenary of the Surrealist Manifesto, the French collective Obvious is joining forces with Paris Brain Institute to explore the links between art, science and the human spirit.

Through the IMAGINE series of works, displayed as part of the ‘Surrealist Paris’ exhibition at the Pompidou Centre, the Obvious collective pushes the boundaries of creativity by generating images obtained directly from brain activity using an innovative process called Mind-to-Image.

The result of intensive functional Magnetic Resonance Imagining (fMRI) sessions with the Institute’s experts, these works translate artists’ brain waves into images interpreted by artificial intelligence algorithms, realizing the surrealist dream of immediate and direct creation, like automatic writing or drawing.

One of the works resulting from this collaboration is being sold to help fund research at the Institute. Presented by Obvious, this unique piece – with a starting price of €20,000 – illustrates the power of human-machine dialogue.
